Regional Workshop on Smuggling of Migrant Workers, Human Trafficking, Corruption, Information Sharing, and Enhanced Cooperation


                The workshop took place in Vientiane, Lao People's Democratic Republic, from April 4th to 5th, 2018. It was attended by several esteemed individuals, including U Ye Htet, Deputy Director of the Anti-Corruption Commission, U Min Naing, Deputy Director from the Anti-Trafficking Police of the Ministry of Home Affairs, and Daw Thuzar Khin, Staff Officer from the Department of Labor of the Ministry of Immigration and Population.

     A total of 45 representatives attended the workshop, including participants from UNODC, UN-ACT experts, anti-corruption groups from Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos, representatives from the Ministry of Labor, the Department of Immigration and Human Trafficking, as well as INGO and NGO representatives.

     By participating in the workshop, migrant workers in Myanmar gained awareness of various measures, such as the importance of establishing and enforcing powerful legal frameworks to combat human trafficking and associated corruption, the need for the development of fair and just legal systems, effective education of law enforcement and the public regarding human trafficking, the fulfillment of responsibilities by government departments in regional countries, information sharing with community organizations, and enhanced cooperation within the government to prevent and combat trafficking. It was emphasized that collaboration between the public, civil society organizations, and government entities is crucial in addressing this issue.
